Granny Maria celebrates 100th birthday

One-hundred years old but still smiles and talks.

TO celebrate your 100th birthday is a milestone and to be able to do so in the presence of your loved ones is a blessing.

Maria Elizabeth Arthur enjoyed her century birthday with her daughter, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and friends on October 6 at Corundum Avenue in Mayfield Park.

Maria was born in 1918 in South West Africa (Namibia) and moved with her parents to Johannesburg. Later in life, she became a hairdresser and worked in Fordsburg as a hairdresser for years.

Maria was married to William Arthur for 50 years and together they had three beautiful children, two girls and a boy. William sadly died 30 years ago and two of her children has also died. Maria now lives with her only remaining child.

She has taken up knitting as a hobby years ago and she still does some knitting today.

Maria used to reside in Regents Park for about 15 years before she moved to Mayfield Park. Here she spent most of her time at Older Apostolic Church where she served the congregation for 70 years with commitment and reverence. Maria still receives visits from her church friends with whom she shares insightful conversations.

She has been described as a pillar of strength to her family and the only who knows how to make the entire family come together. Even at her 100th birthday celebration she still has the ability to unite people and make them indulge in talks that are motivational and uplifting.

Her family feels proud and blessed to still have her around to share hugs, kisses and lots of joyous moments with her. Maria was all smiles throughout the day as she saw people coming in numbers to wish her more years.

“We as a family are truly blessed to have her in our lives and I hope we can walk many more years with her. She has been everything to us, this day will stay in our hearts for many years to come. Friends from church visit her now and again,” said granddaughter Miranda Ihlenfeldt.
