Joseph provides by chopping and selling wood
As long as his family eats, he is satisfied.
FAMILY of seven depends on Joseph Makumala’s wood to make ends meet.
Joseph Makumala, father of five and a hard working husband, is unemployed since 1993 and he recently lost his hearing. He lives in Jackson Informal Settlement South of Johannesburg.
Since 2000 he has been cutting wood from trees around the settlement. He then sells the wood to taxi drivers, truck drivers and residents.
He told COURIER that he makes R60 a day. Pap, bread and other things are covered for the day with the money that he makes from selling wood. He has housed himself and his family in a two-roomed shack in the settlement.
“I don’t want to say one day I will become a businessman no. All that I want now is to see my children succeed in life. I want them to be educated so that they can live a better life than me.
“I’m struggling today because I did not have an education on my side to get a job that could’ve helped me and my family. But, even now, I am trying and one day my situation will turn into testimony,” said Joseph.
He claims that selling wood is his only source of income and he has been able to prevent poverty.
