MTB schools league in full swing

Spur Schools MTB League in full swing.

The Spur Schools MTB League is in full swing and riders throughout the country have one common goal; to reach the final in October.

The weekend’s events took place in Gauteng, the Free State and the Western Cape and riders braved some tough trails to emerge triumphant in all events.

In the Free State, MTB buffs took off at Stonepark in Welkom and proceeded to pedal 4 280km and clocked in a total of 400 laps. According to race director, Pieter Herbst, 116 riders entered this third event, a 15 per cent increase when compared to the previous event.

The top-performing primary schools are Grey College Primary School (1), Ficksburg Primary School (2) and Zastron Primary School (3). The top-performing high schools are Grey College (1), Fichardtpark High School (2) and Ficksburg High School (3).“What an extraordinary day. Rider participation increased and everyone enjoyed a wonderful and safe riding day,” Herbst said.

Meanwhile, Riders in Gauteng bid August farewell in style. Saturday’s race kicked-off at St Stithian’s College in Johannesburg and riders raced a total of 8 250km and clocked in 1 650 laps for the day. A total of 770 riders participated in the event.

Race director for the Western Cape, Michelle du Preez says it was no different in her region. Riders saddled-up at the Montana High School in Worcester and pedalled 5 230.9km and clocked in 1 343 laps.

The top-performing primary schools are Van Riebeeckstrand Primary School (1), Kenridge Primary School (2) and Durbanville Primary School (3). The top-performing high schools are Paul Roos Gimnasium High School (1), Parel Vallei High School (2) and HTS Drostdy (3).

“Despite the cold and windy conditions in Worcester, riders and parents came out in their numbers. The event ran like a well-oiled machine and we had 578 happy riders,” Du Preez said.
