17-year-old from Booysens informal settlement braids hair to keep busy

Residents trust Sisipho Nxazonke with their hair.

SISIPHO Nxazonke (17) from Booysens informal settlement uses her hair-braiding talent to help friends and neighbours with their hair.

The aspiring young hair-braider hopes if she could get her name out there by helping those around her first, and at the same time get experience, she can become a professional.

She started braiding hair from five years and told the COURIER she can braid any hairstyle if provided with material.

The most people that come to her are school learners mostly on weekends. Some of the residents occasionally compensate her after having their hair braided. The 17-year-old is currently planning to open her own braiding salon in the community.

“Braiding hair was just a hobby in the beginning but ended up being a career that I wanted to peruse. For now, I am doing this voluntary, lending a hand where needed. I have a passion for hair and I know that one day I will become one of the best braiding stylist ever,” explained Sisipho.

Sisipho is gradually becoming a well-known hair-braider in the settlement and believes keeping herself busy like this is much better than doing nothing.
