On Sunday afternoon October 20, my dog hurt her leg.

We took her to Booysens SPCA. Needless to say I am disgusted by them. No vet available on Sunday afternoon. We were given a list of referred vets. Most of them were closed and those that were open charge exorbitant prices, one even wanted to charge R6 500.

If your dog is injured/poisoned on a Sunday afternoon they are either going to die or suffer until Monday when the SPCA is open.

The SPCA logo is ‘we care about animals’, I think not.

JSPCA’s response:

”Unfortunately, we cannot assist people after hours as we do not have a veterinarian on premises. We are open between 09:00 to 17:00 weekdays, 09:00 to 12:00 Saturdays and Sundays and Public Holidays we are closed. Hence the reason why the complainant was referred to a private veterinarian. Keeping an animal is a lifelong commitment during which we do our utmost to assist people who cannot afford the services of a private veterinarian. The welfare of the animals in our care are our number one priority, however, in terms of us assisting the general public, we are bound by veterinary council laws, that we cannot assist members of the public who do not qualify for welfare services in terms of their income. These individuals must also be referred to private veterinarians.”
