Jackson drift horror toilet

Residents fear that one day someone might get raped or a child might get hurt there.

AN isolated toilet in Jackson informal settlement in the south of Johannesburg has turned into a dumping place for residents.

Some residents use the toilet for their illegal activities.

“Even when you walk by the toilet at night it’s scary. The toilet has been there for more than two years now and we don’t know who to contact regarding the toilet so that it could be removed,” they said.

Residents fear that one day someone might get raped or a child might get hurt there.

The community of Jackson also feels that the government is failing them dismally, not only because of the toilet issue but service delivery in general since they have no means of electricity or proper roads.

In April, the community barricaded the R82 because they wanted their concerns to be attended to but that did not materialise.

“This toilet is a real problem. The smell from the toilet is unbearable and opposite the toilet there are street vendors selling food. We want the councillor to at least get the toilet removed,” they said.

Thabo Moloi, one of the local residents said: “This toilet is really a concern because our children can get hurt – they play everywhere. We as residents feel that our community is not considered when it comes to community development because even the rubbish that is thrown in the toilet is not collected by the municipal. The area needs someone who will be more concerned about what the community needs and not what his/her pocket needs.”

The COURIER tried contacting the councillor but he couldn’t be reached for comment.
