Jacksons Drift elderly garden project

Elderly keep themselves busy with planting vegetables.

GRANNIES from Jackson’s Drift Informal Settlement started a garden project called Grannies on the Move where they plant different kinds of vegetables.

The project was started by Tracy Tsikwa (58) earlier this year with the purpose to teach other grannies about agriculture.

About 35 elderly from different sections in the settlement are always present to keep the project going.

After harvesting they clean the vegetables and sell it to the community and from the money earned, they buy clothes for children in the community and help struggling families.

Tracy said: “Most of the elderly in Jackson’s Drift are unemployed so with this project they are able to provide for their families. Not only do we plant but we teach each other social skills as well.”

ALL IN ONE SPIRIT: The elderly hold arms showing unity in the great work they are doing in the small garden they have.
