Rosettenville residents march for development

Genarium and Main streets were blockaded by dissatisfied residents of Rosettenville on May 25 as they were seeking radical socio-economic transformation in Ward 56.

GERANIUM and Main streets were blockaded by dissatisfied residents of Rosettenville on May 25 as they were seeking radical socio-economic transformation in Ward 56.

The march was organised by the ANC and its alliances SANCO and SACP to hand over the memorandum to the JMPD satellite office management and South Rand Hospital.

Residents are dissatisfied with the lack of job opportunities in the ward. South Rand Hospital is accused of offering jobs to residents who are not from the area while there are local residents that can fill positions in the hospital. When the residents arrived to hand over the memorandum at the JMPD offices, the management was not present to receive the memorandum.

The residents of Rosettenville said they organised this march because they saw no change happening in Ward 56 with regards to service delivery. Residents say that they are still without houses, jobs and they are also concerned about the increase in crime in the area. The march created fear among foreign shop owners who closed their shops and hid indoors as they thought the march was against them.

“We are here because we want transformation in Ward 56 and we want them to build RDP houses and blocks of flats. The ward is under-developed. Not forgetting expropriation of abandoned properties to be given to the residents,” said Zandila Tembani, women’s league branch secretary.

MARCH: Rosettenville residents took their dissatisfaction to the streets on May 25.

SAPS and JMPD were visible during the march to ensure that the march is peaceful.

“The major thing that we are raising is the budget allocation for our ward. The reason this ward is highly under-developed is that we have never been given any budget to develop our community. The community does not even have sports facilities,” said Simphiwe Hlafa, ANC branch secretary.
