Legal march to transform community

THE ANC OR Tambo branch, in partnership with the alliance component South African National Civic Organization (Sanco) Ward 56, calls upon all residents of the ward and the surrounding communities to partake in a community march.

Anyone, regardless of religion, party affiliation or colour, can participate in the community march for jobs and a clean crime-free developed community. The march will be called the Radical Socio-Economic Transformation March.

The march will take place on May 25 from 8am. Marchers will assemble in front of the supermarket opposite the Shell Garage on the corner of Geranium and Bouquet streets.

“This is legal march as an application has been lodged with the JMPD. Ward 56 is badly underdeveloped as we have consistently said before, unlike our sister wards. As a result, unemployment levels increase daily which consequently increases homelessness because of rental unaffordability as people are evicted. Crime levels are also going up. Therefore, we demand budget allocation for Ward 56 to build a block of flats as social housing schemes, which we do not have, on the unused land before the community occupies.

“We further demand that the municipality expropriates all abandoned, neglected and hijacked properties, in particular blocks of flats, and open them to the needy as part of social housing programmes in order address housing challenges. Those properties must be managed by complying and or qualifying community co-operatives appointed by government,” ANC branch secretary Simphiwe Hlafa said.

He was emphatic on the ANC demand that the health department and the Department of Infrastructure and Development must allocate 30 per cent of jobs to local SMMEs and unemployed locals from maintenance to security services, clerical jobs and cleaning jobs. He said they remain resolute and unapologetic on this demand and they shall ensure its implementation. Locals must partake meaningfully in the local economy.

“The South Hills Housing Development is presently taking a sizeable portion of land from Ward 56, hence we shall also be giving Motheo Construction an instruction on the day to shut down the site until we are assured that local SMMEs and unemployed skilled and unskilled locals will economically participate in the development itself.

“We want people to partake in the march with their CVs and business profiles for these authorities to see evidence of the economic exclusion of locals. The newly launched Rosettenville Progressive Business Forum, chaired by Moloko Malakalaka, will co-ordinate these CVs and profiles from May 25. Centro Management is responding well to the community issues raised with them in February, we want all these institutions to take a cue from them,” said Hlafa.

The ANC humbly requests all business entities in Ward 56 to close their businesses from 9am until 2pm and join the march to be in solidarity with the community and be present when these demands are submitted,” he said.
