Rosehill Nursery School celebrate 70th birthday

They are proud to be celebrating 70 years and they realise with awe how many lives they have touched.

WALK down memory lane with Rosehill Nursery School as they celebrate their amazing 70th birthday recently.

In September 1947, a group of parents first got together as they felt that a nursery school was needed in the Rosettenville and surrounding areas.

In October of that year, they organised a fête, which raised 500 pounds. This was sufficient to get the school started.

The school was opened on January 26, 1948, in the Wavell Hall in La Rochelle, where it started with 11 learners, and slowly built up to the final complement of 25 learners.

The first supervisor of the school was Mrs Towler, who was assisted by an unqualified assistant teacher Mrs MacNaught.

Shortly after the school opened, a polio epidemic broke out in the greater Johannesburg area and the school was forced to close and remained closed until the end of May of that year.

In November 1950, the school was notified that they would lose their subsidy unless more suitable premises were found, so the school moved into St Stephan’s Presbyterian Hall in January 1951.

The school flourished, and on August 27, 1960, the premise on the corner of North and Albert Streets in Townsview was opened and still thrives here for almost 58 years.

The school has grown and gone from strength to strength. It has always been known for its well-qualified and dedicated staff. Most importantly, the children are happy and secure in this nurturing environment. They are proud to be celebrating 70 years and they realise with awe how many lives they have touched.
