Councillor fed-up with no service delivery
Surely the mayor’s A Re Sebetseng hasn’t visited this area.
A HANDFUL of residents who lived in a block of flats along Glenroy Road, Glenesk are livid because of the state of their flats and its surroundings – these are slowly crumbling.
The COURIER accompanied the ward councillor of Ward 124, Mongameli Mnyameni, to inspect the outside of the flats. It is clear that the residents are expected to live in appalling conditions, which is an understatement to describe these flats according to the councillor. Mould and fungus form part of the characteristics of these flats. Blocked drains, leaking taps and dirt are at the order of the day.
The area which is a health hazard. Mnyameni said he visited the area last year August and has since escalated the matter to the housing department, and they say budget constraints are hindering the progress of fixing the problem. “Surely the mayor’s A Re Sebetseng hasn’t visited this area,” he said.
“I have reported this matter to the housing department and they said there is no money, the City doesn’t have money. Like the issues of Reuven Old Age Home, where you find leaking taps, sinks and broken toilet systems and overgrown grass. You report these problems and nothing is done by the DA-EFF unholy marriage. And there is a wall that was destroyed by the storm at that old age home last year around November but that wall is still not fixed. That is exposing too much risk for our senior citizens that were already victims of burglaries that are happening there.
“I reported all that but was told the same story of there is no money. I don’t understand because the previous administration had money and there was more than R3-billion but we are always told that there is no money,” he said.
“Where is the money Mr Mayor? Our people need service delivery! Our people are tired of being told lies about previous administration, please Mr Mayor if usehluleka hlika Tata bakhona abantu abakwaziyo ukwenzela abantu izidingo zabo please Tata jongana neshishini lenwele please. (Translation: You are not coping, step down because there are people who know how to meet the people’s needs, you can focus on your hair business.)
“I have to fight tooth and nail so the area where people live can be cleaned and I don’t know where this so-called A Re Sebetseng is. I was there and tried to unblock the drainage but I don’t get any assistance from the government of DA-EFF at all,” he said.
A media enquiry was sent to the housing department’s deputy director of communications, Buntukazi Xuba, who replied: “I acknowledge receipt of your email. I will revert as soon as I have gathered the information.”
