Locals go for fundus screenings on World Retina Day

Communities visited some of the optometrists in their areas to have a free screening of their eyes.

World Retina day was held on September 28 and the communities could visit some of the optometrists in their areas to have a free screening of their eyes.

Zelda van Coller optometrists at Dynamic Vision in Alberton, celebrated World Retina Day by performing free fundus screenings for individuals in the area on Thursday.

Van Coller said it gives her and her colleagues great joy to educate the community on the importance of eye-care. And, it was a pleasure to assist with fundus screenings on World Retina Day and help people from the community to determine eye-related disorders in time.

“Fundus screenings are done to monitor the progression of certain eye disorders. The screenings are used to document abnormalities in the retina that effects the eye as well as following up on the progress of eye disorders such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and cataracts.”

“To pick up on eye-health disorders early enough, visit an optometrist at least every twelve months. It is vital to take care of your windows to the world.”

For any sun loving South African, sunglasses are undoubtedly one of the most important accessories in summer. Not only do they serve the all-important purpose of protecting the eyes against ultraviolet light, but they can also be a statement of style, personality and even mood.

“Today’s designers take great care to make sunglasses stylish, protective and functional to suit our outdoor summer lifestyles. Certainly, we want sunglasses to be protective while complementing our look. This year, sun glass styles are more diverse than they have ever been; from retro and futuristic, to classic, high fashion and sporty, there really is something to suite all styles and tastes. One of the more notable trends this summer is ‘athleisure’ which mixes active with casual fashion. Sporty looking, colourful sunglasses are an all-important accompaniment for transitioning from the gym to the street,” said Ruahan Naude, CEO at Dynamic Vision.
