World Rabies Day

Rabies vaccinations are available at Alberton SPCA.

WORLD Rabies Day is on September 28 and rabies remains a significant health problem in many countries of the world and South Africa is no exception.

Over 99 per cent of all human deaths that are caused by infected dogs usually occurs in Africa and Asia, especially in regions with large numbers of unvaccinated domestic dogs and cats. It is estimated that 55 000 people die every year from rabies. One death occurs every 15 minutes and four out of 10 deaths are children. There is no known record of the number of animals that die from rabies each year.

It is essential that your dogs and cats are vaccinated annually against rabies as there is no known cure.

“Rabies has a 100 per cent fatality rate. If you are bitten by a rabid animal, unless you can get an immediate life-saving vaccine, you will die.”

“Please be a responsible pet owner and vaccinate your pets. Rabies vaccinations are available at Alberton SPCA, Lincoln Road, General Alberts Park,” said Vanja Ingold, a member from Alberton SPCA.
