A special birthday for animal loving twins

Instead of the special twins receiving gifts for their birthday, their parents Hayley and Shaun opted to give back to the loving animals at the Animal Anti Cruelty League in Regents Park.

On September 16, twins Logan-Cael and Lilly-Mae Bierman who both suffer from Cerebral Palsy, turned two and invited people to celebrate their birthday in a different way.

Instead of the special twins receiving gifts for their birthdays, their parents, Hayley and Shaun from Brackendowns opted to give back to the loving animals at the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) in Regents Park south of Johannesburg, by having guests bring supplies to the animal rescue centre.

The twins, who officially turned two on September 19, celebrated their birthdays with and for the furry friends at AACL on Saturday.

Guests who attended the birthday party brought gifts in the form of dogfood, cash donations, blankets, catfood, and chew-toys as well as other animal care giving items.

BITES: Most of the food was specially designed to suit the theme.

Paw Patrols

These twins were born at a very early 30 weeks and weighed a kilogram each. The parents both describe the twins as ‘miracle babies’ because their mother, Hayley had been told by doctors that she was unable to have children.

The special type of birthday celebration came about when parents, Shaun and Hayley, visited the AACL with their twins a couple of months ago to find out whether they would be able to hold a small birthday party for the twins at the premises.

FUN TIME: Children were being children.

The special party was themed Paw Patrols and had everything – from food to décor – reflect that theme.

Some items on the menu included hot dogs, potato chips in a bowl marked ‘Paw-tato’ chips, sour worm sweets inside a bowl marked ‘chew sticks’ and cup-cakes decorated with bone-like toppings. There were also other snacks and beverages for the guests.

TOO MUCH: Some guests were just too tired. Sonja van Niekerk and Kaden.

Be kind and helpful

Mother Hayley said the twins were animal lovers and they wanted this year’s birthday celebration to be one that gave back to the community so they asked their friends and family to rather donate items to AACL instead of giving the twins birthday presents. Both Shaun and Hayley find it important to help where they can to raise their children to be kind and helpful.

AACL public relations officer Heather Cowie said it was so fulfilling to see such a selfless act. “Supporting causes such as these unites people but they do not only bring people together but cater to the needs of both people and the animals in need,” she said and thanked the Bierman family for their selfless act.

Cowie said AACL was delighted to host the twins – a first for the organisation. She hoped this would set the tone for similar happy events in the future.

“We are a community driven organisation that looks at the needs of animals and people for the greater good of all. We really appreciate the fact that we have been included in such a selfless and worthy undertaking,” she said.

Hayley said the twins would also be holding a golf day at the Glenvista Country Club on October 6 to raise funds for the babies’ intensive ABM Neuro Genesis Therapy. She said the twins were a challenge financially when it came to their health because of the medical bills. She said they were looking forward to teaming up with the country club to help ease the load.
