U-18 Football Challenge a boost for school’s soccer

Clapham High School from Pretoria were crowned champions.

THE inaugural African Bank football challenge focused on school’s soccer and altogether 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams participated in the event.

The event took place from September 1 to 3 at the University of Johannesburg, Bunting Road.

Clapham High School from Pretoria were crowned champions in the boys’ section after beating Emshukantambo Secondary School from Pimville in the final, while Rosina Sedibane came out victors in the girls’ section.

“African Bank has had problems in the past where we went through a rough patch and people thought our doors were shut. We had to sit down and see how we can bring the brand back to life and taking it to the people. What better way to do that by getting involved in football development in our country. Going the school’s football route was a great way for us to grow the bank beyond just banking. We saw this as an opportunity that will create lasting memories for the learners, the parents and educators,” said Kaibe Mollo, African Bank head of marketing.

The participating school’s teams were the district winners from the 15 districts in Gauteng, while the hosting district was allocated two spots.

In partnership with the custodians of soccer in the country, the South African Football Association, the Department of Education and the Department of Sport, the tournament is set to take place in five other provinces; KwaZulu Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State and Western Cape.

“It is always great to see corporate companies like African Bank coming on board to assist with development at grass roots level. Such initiatives help with taking the young ones off the streets and away from doing all the wrong things,” said Anthony Reeves, SAFA NEC Member/SAFA Johannesburg president.
