Mandela smiles in the south

Whilst trying to help the residence they were both shot and killed.

EFFORTS to give back to the nation in celebration of Mandela day were well under way this week.

Environmental Health alongside a fleet of associates rallied together to help add some colour and life to several parts of the south of Johannesburg.

Environmental health for region F Shalin Bidassay-Manilal said several parts like the Rosettenville Clinic, Fischer Park, in the Hill, The Rosettenville Primary School Wall was selected for much-needed facelifts.

A COAT OF PAINT: The park was given a facelift.

Bidassa-Manilal said the visit to the facility made the entire team take note of the outside area that could do with upliftment. “Our communication with the clinic Sister Maria Morare, made us realise what a great impact we could have if we assisted with the beautification of the entrance.”

Gravel was poured in patches that did not have cement. Tyres collected from dumping hotspots were used to plant vegetation and were placed at certain points. The collected tyres were also developed into chairs and tables to accommodate all breast feeding mothers at the clinic.

LENDING A HAND: The wall was painted after the advertising pamphlets were removed.

The Rosettenville Primary School Wall was painted and the overgrown vegetation removed from the sides of the wall.

Bidassa-Manilal said a project was carried out on Main Street a year and a half ago in Rosettenville to paint the school wall that had slowly deteriorated over the years. Advertisers used this wall as a focal point to paste posters and pamphlets concerning illegal abortions, rooms to let, spiritual healers contact details and more. After the main portion of the affected wall was painted the problem was eliminated.

A few years ago this community lost two men who responded to a house robbery in the area. One belonged to the CPF and the other a reaction officer. Whilst trying to help the residents they were both shot and killed. A small portion of this park was developed to commemorate them. Residence got together and planted trees and plants.

Some of the contributors who assisted in giving on the day were the Health promotion and programs unit, Rosettenville Primary School learners, SAPS & JMPD Social Crime Prevention Units, local businesses, Artists, City Parks, Pikitup, The Environmental Health Department, The Southern Early Childhood Development Forum, Spar Kenilworth, The Hill Awareness Group (THAG), and Environmental Management Student Lewis’s group.

ADDING COLOUR: Tyrers were turned into chairs.
GOING GREEN: Plants were planted.
