WATCH: Companies rally to spoil grannies in celebration of Mother’s Day

Our grannies spend their little grants caring for the entire family and some of them are breadwinners. They give all they have without taking care of themselves.

VARIOUS companies in the South rallied around Busi Zakwe, a local resident who organised and hosted a series of events to spoil grandmothers from the Soweto area, on May 19.

This marked the fifth annual day of its kind. About 22 grannies from in and around Soweto were warmly embraced.

RELAX: Gogos take time out on the relaxation machines at the Gym Company’ spa in Winchester Hills.

“We initiated this programme to show appreciation for our elders as they play a vital role in our society. It is important for the elderly to stay healthy and be educated in ways to maintain their fitness. Elders often hide their sorrows because they always put other people first,” said Busi.

EXERCISING: The grannies were given a medical check-up before using the machines.

The day began at the Mondeor Tennis Club, where breakfast was sponsored by Southgate Pick and Pay. The grannies were treated to Jungle Oats, Weet-Bix, juices, platters, savouries, sandwiches and juice.

HELPING: Maserame Mphehlo checks on one of the grannies.

“By doing this we are giving back to the community. We say ‘thank you’ and happy Mother’s Day to all our loyal customers and may God grant you all many more years to come. We are also uniting with our women, young and old, and hope that they all stay loyal customers,” said customer service manager Lorraine Mogoru.

LOVELY: Busi Zakwe, Fikile Khumalo, Zandile Buthelezi, Lorraine Mogoru (customer service manager at Pick n Pay) and Sydney Nhlapo (employee at Engen garage, which sponsored the gifts).

The next stop was the Gym Company in Winchester Hills.

REACHING OUT: Lorraine Mogoru (customer service manager at Pick n Pay), Cylia Modila and Mary Maponya (spa managers), Busi Zakwe and William Machete (trainee manager at Pick n Pay).

“The Gym Company provides the best service and we are grateful that they offered to be a part of this initiative. Our plan was to help the elders forget a bit about their daily routine or stress,” said Busi.

GOOD VIBRATIONS: Ziyanda Nomphandana from the Gym Company spa assists one of the grannies.

The grannies received free spa treatments.

“We are privileged to help make the grannies feel good and we welcomed them to the spa. We can see how happy they are here and they feel relaxed and excited to be spoilt for a day,’’ said spa manager Mary Maponya.

CHECKS: The grannies received medical check-ups at the gym.

The grannies all took turns on the various relaxation and exercise machines.

“We are honoured to be a part of this great initiative and we are happy that we get to give back to the community,” said spa manager Cylia Modila.

The grannies were then treated to lunch at Spur at Gold Reef City and were entertained by the staff.

Next they received a gift pack sponsored by the Engen garage in Diepkloof, Soweto.

“We always appreciate the sponsorship we get receive from Engen whenever we ask for help. This company touches our elders’ lives and the community at large,” said Busi.
