Featherweight boxers to thrill

WBC, champion Gary Russell will be looking to enhance his reputation.

The featherweight division is one of boxing’s most talented weight categories. It is packed with talent from the likes of Leo Santa Cruz, Abner Mares, Lee Selby and Gary Russell Jnr.

World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Russell will be looking to enhance his reputation when he makes his title defence against interim title-holder Oscar Escandon.

The fight will be broadcast on StarSat Sports Arena on May 21 at 12.40am (SA time).

Russell is a top fighter, who is ranked number two by the legendary Ring Magazine. With a record of 27-1, (16 by knockout) he comes into the fight as a hot favourite.

His only defeat has come at the hands of superstar Vasyl Lomachenko.

Escandon may be the underdog, but he is not to be written off. At 25-2 he is as tough as they come.

Boxing promoter Tom Brown believes this is a fight not to be missed.

“This is going to be a great night of boxing,” he said.

“The featherweight division is very hot right now with the recent wins by Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares. There is something very special going on in the division and this will be another memorable fight. Escandon is a tough warrior who has proven time and again that he doesn’t care about going on the road or where he fights. There are great boxing fans in the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region and they have an exciting night on May 20 in store.”

Russell comes from a fighting family and this will be on show on Sunday morning. The undercard will feature his younger brothers Gary Antonio (former Olympian) and Gary Antuanne. His other brother, Gary Allan, will be helping out in their corners.

Catch all the action live and exclusive on ST Sports Arena on Sunday at 12.40am (SA time).
