THE Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, is livid over the spate of brutal killings of women in Gauteng.
This comes after a recent incident where a young woman, Karabo Mokoena, from Diepkloof in Soweto, was allegedly murdered and burnt beyond recognition by her boyfriend.
Karabo’s body was found in a deserted veld in Bramley. Her death has sparked nationwide outrage and debates about gender-based violence.
Last month Jeanette Cindi was raped and brutally murdered in Tshepisong on the West Rand. About seven suspects were arrested.
The MEC is calling upon the citizens of Gauteng to unite in the fight against gender-based violence and to adopt a 365-day programme to address the issue.
“The fight against woman abuse needs social cohesion with its constituent elements that include social inclusion, social capital and social mobility. The significance of the faith-based organisations, community-based organisations, non-governmental organisations and business sector can never go unnoticed. As a society, we need to strengthen the role played by the above- mentioned stakeholders and as a collective begin to walk the talk in our quest to eradicate this monstrous behaviour.
“I appeal to all the citizens of Gauteng to resist the temptation of committing violence against women, irrespective of the situation they might find themselves in. I again appeal to the criminal justice system to ensure that any individual who commits such heinous crimes are brought to book and given the harshest sentence,” said Nkosi-Malobane.
