Malajika joins Olympic squad

Marinda Malajika joins ECAS for 2020 Olympic squad.

THE current South African champion from South Hills amateur boxing club has been included in the 2020 Olympic squad.

Fifteen-year old Marinda Malajika, who is the reigning 2016 52kg division champion, was included in the Eastern Cape Academy of Sport (ECAS) for the 2020 Olympic squad. He is a learner at Diversity High School.

Athletes who are included in the 2020 Olympic squad compete on national and international level and will be administered by the ECAS to enable them to compete at a higher level.

The Malajika brothers are well known in the amateur boxer ranks. Currently three of them are actively involved in boxing, including Marinda and his two brothers, Carlton and Ricardo, who have also made a name for themselves.

Ricardo (18) represented South Africa at the Zone 6 All Africa Games, which took place in December in Angola. He won the gold medal in the 56kg division and received his Proteas colours in amateur boxing.

The eldest brother, Carlton (24), competed in the 60kg division and won the Johannesburg Amateur Boxing Organisation (JABO) title. He then went on to represent JABO at the Gauteng amateur boxing championship.

Head coach at South Hills club, Billy Hurford received his honorary life membership from JABO.

Anyone who wishes to join the club can contact Billy on 083 220 9408.
