Couple celebrates their 69th wedding anniversary

“The minute I laid eyes on her, I immediately fell in love, and I told myself I am going to marry this beautiful woman."

REUVEN Old Age Home residents Cameron (92) and Thora (90) Green celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, January 17.

Thora celebrated her 90th birthday on January 12, just five days before their anniversary. Her husband said they have two sons, two daughters, 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

He said their love for each other remains very strong. They are attached to each other and have never lived apart. “I have a good and loyal wife who stood by me through thick and thin. We faced tough times and good times, and God has been good to us. We have good children and we adore our grandchildren,” said Cameron.

Their love story is very interesting. Cameron said he met Thora when she was 20 years old. “The minute I laid eyes on her, I immediately fell in love, and I told myself I am going to marry this beautiful woman. People ask me, how did I meet Thora, and I tell them I met her by chance. I was taking a lady friend to a dance. At the last minute she told me she couldn’t go but would arrange for a friend of hers to be my partner, and the rest is history. Thora looked so beautiful and smartly dressed with her long hair and friendly and magnetic personality. I was actually swept off my feet.

“We were very much in love, and I asked her to marry me. Her father said only when she turns 21, and when she did, five days later we got married, and here we are today, 69 year later and we are still together, still very much in love with each other. Our lives were hectic. We travelled far and wide, we visited many countries and travelled by air, sea and land. We loved to learn the cultures and ways of other nations. We both found it very interesting,” he said.

Cameron said he was a very successful businessman. “At 25 I worked for the mining industry as an accountant and secretary. I later started my own estate agency during that time. I was actively involved with the ratepayers’ association and served as chairperson. I also became a candidate for the Randburg Provincial Council in 1974. The most exciting experience I enjoyed was when I owned a number of racehorses. Some of them were winners.

“Looking back, my wife and I had an exciting and very happy life. We have many pleasant memories and we never stop talking and reminiscing about the past. Just to keep ourselves busy, my wife and I are selling second-hand books at the Southdale Shopping Centre. We enjoy what we are doing, and it keeps us busy,” noted Cameron.
