Damelin’s rising music star

Cardo is hands-on with his music; from writing his own lyrics to production, recording and post production processes.

DAMELIN Braamfontein alumni and former sound engineering student Masana Mblalati has released his first hit single, Squad, which can be seen on the Channel O and Trace TV channels.

Masana was born in Tzaneen, Limpopo and is a rising star in the music industry. On October 17, 2015, Squad was released by black-owned independent record label Faculty Entertainment; and is currently playlisted on YFM, Metro FM and UJFM. The single has received rave reviews around the country, with over 5 000 downloads and over 500 live streams.

Masana, aka ‘Cardo’, moved to Johannesburg in 2011 to follow his dream of becoming a hip hop artist – and after researching sound engineers in South Africa, he came across an article on Maynard Mabatle, who is a sound engineering lecturer at Damelin Braamfontein. Cardo was so fascinated by Maynard and all of his accomplishments in the sound and music industry, that he decided to enrol as a sound engineering student at Damelin, under the mentorship of Maynard himself.

The sound engineering course exceeded Cardo’s expectations. “At first I thought the course would only be about recording music, but it taught me a whole lot more. I learned the technical aspects of sound and how the industry functions. Furthermore, I acquired the skills to manipulate music software to my benefit – and to incorporate music theory with my passion. I now know exactly what to do when I make music; and how to ensure the best quality product in the market,” he said.

Cardo is hands-on with his music; from writing his own lyrics to production, recording and post production processes. Cardo’s debut EP titled ‘The Forever Combo’ was released on October 6. Cardo said that the entire EP was mixed by himself, using the skills he gained from Damelin. It’s available on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, Soundcloud and Apple Music – and will be released as an album this year!
