Race For Victory celebrates 21st year

Race For Victory will take place this coming Sunday.

THE 2016 edition of the Rand Water Race For Victory road cycle will celebrate its 21st year since its inception.

The cycling event takes place on Sunday, September 11. The start and finish will be at the Boswell Wilkie Circus in Daleside.

The Frances Vorwerg School for physically and learning disabled children, which is situated in the South, is the beneficiary and organiser of the event.

The event includes an Elite cycle event of 150km for professional riders, 54km and 110km. All the distances will go out towards areas such as Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve and Walkerville areas – more or less the same as the previous year.

Vital assistance will be provided by Think Bike race marshals, Midvaal traffic department, JMPD, Ekurhuleni traffic department and Klipriver SAPD. The roads will be relatively free of traffic. Netcare 911 will provide first aid support.

Past winners of the Elite event include ex-champions Alan van Heerden, Gary Beneke, Douglas Ryder, Nicolas White and Malcolm Lange, and in recent years international stars such as Daryl Impey and Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg, who competed in the 2016 Tour de France.

The main 150km race is always characterised by the steep hills and beauty of the Suikerbosrand reserve and this is where last year’s Willie Smit made his winning move.

The main sponsor of the event, Rand Water, has proved vital in ensuring the longevity of this prestigious race by pledging its support year in and year out, together with other sponsors.

The sponsors ensure the cyclists get value for money for their entry fee and that Frances Vorwerg School is able to continue providing a valuable service to our community.

Over R70 000 in prize money is up for grabs in all the categories as well as the usual lucky draw prizes.

Entries can be made at the France Vorwerg School 011 683 3390.
