EFF women in silent protest against abuse

The police encouraged to take women's issues serious by a silent march.

THE Economic Freedom Fighters’ women took to the Booysens SAPS police station to protest in silence on Friday, August 26, to support abused women in need of help and to encourage policewomen to continue their brave efforts.

The women said the action was not a protest against any specific case or suspect but rather to represent women of the South. It was also meant to remind the police that women’s need for police intervention should continue to be taken seriously, especially since there are still a number of adult women and teenage girls who are afraid to come forward and report domestic abuse in their homes.

The protesters came from the EFF in the South’s wards 125 and 54 and received great support. Women as well as men visiting the police station stopped to shake their hands and tell them that they have their full support.

“We want everyone to know that when women come to report abuse, they must always be treated with respect and kindness, irrespective of the title of the perpetrator. We also support the motion that says rape suspects should not be allowed to make bail as some of these perpetrators victimise women in the homes they live in, and once bail is accepted, they go back to those homes and inflict emotional and psychological pain on those women,” said Rose Ngubeni.

Salome Mashabela added that, “We as women want to inform victims of abuse, especially molested girls, that they should not be afraid to report any form of abuse. We feel the issue of women abuse has been taken more seriously over the last couple of years but we are still not satisfied and we will never be until such a point when women can live in a free and safe South Africa, where they will not be abused simply because they are women.”
