Don’t miss the soapbox derby

The main aim is to raise funds for the Dare 2 Dream project which is a stable yard that cares for abused and abandoned horses.

THE bi-annual soapbox derby will be held in Walkerville (3 Eeufees Road) on September 10, starting at 10:00.

In the previous derby, the fastest lap was by Mustang in 57.90 seconds which remains to be beaten. The main aim is to raise funds for the Dare 2 Dream project which is a stable yard that cares for abused and abandoned horses.

They also have therapy sessions with children who may have been abused or abandoned, where the horses and children work together to heal each other.

There are currently three horses that need to be fed and taken care of, especially since the drought has really taken its toll and hay has become exceptionally expensive.

In 2002 and 2003 Dare 2 Dream rescued horses from abuse and neglect and once they were rehabilitated, they were used to help children who have come from similar backgrounds. Dare 2 Dream has worked with many children’s homes over the years, and at the moment is working with St Nicholas and Abraham Kriel children’s homes. According to the programme co-ordinator of Dare 2 Dream, Brenda de Klerk, there are approximately 30 children who come to the programme over the course of each month as they alternate with boys and girls every second week. The programme is held twice a week on Monday and Thursday afternoons.
