Cable theft in West Turffontein

RESIDENTS were left outraged after electric cables were stolen near the substation at the park.

RESIDENTS in Allin Street, West Turffontein, were left outraged after electric cables were stolen near the substation at the park, on the corner of Allin Street and Hammond Road.

The theft happened in the early hours of Monday, August 1. A cable of about 15m was dug out from a shallow trench that runs from the electric pole to the substation.

Thabo Tsolo, a resident from the neighbourhood, said this has been happening quite often in this area. “We don’t know who to turn to. The problem here are the shallow trenches for the cable. Obviously it will be stolen. Now some residents do not have electricity,” he said.

He also said there is a park where cables were stolen and live wires are now exposed.

Both ward 55 councilor and City Power were contacted regarding this matter. Their comments will follow.

The COURIER will follow up with the new ward councillor as well.
