The Bag Lady

My 20 years with Caxton has been a journey I will never forget.

WITH the amount of colds and flu about I’ve been struck with a nasty bout of sinusitis and even though I can still walk around and look reasonably okay, it’s crippling. If this lot of antibiotics, along with eucalyptus oil, cups full of lemon juice with honey and raw ginger and a few days in bed, do no good, I think I’ll have to think about…yes, you’ve guessed, a sinus scrape. Not the way I want to go but at this stage I don’t think I have any other option. Please keep your fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

Twenty years with Caxton

Other than this I’m great and yes, we’ve passed the shortest day, June 21, which coincided with a special anniversary for me, 20 years with Caxton. Some may say a life sentence but I can honestly say, I get up every day and look forward to the challenges that lay ahead. Being a reporter and news editor for a community newspaper is rather like being a ward councillor and a counsellor who helps people and friends, all rolled into one. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been invited to tea or to pop in and have a chat with residents and what an honour it’s been. I doubt there’s any other job in the world where you get to see people as they really are without airs and graces and some at rock bottom. Yes, of course we also get to meet socialites, actors and actresses and “big” shots, but it’s the man on the street who keeps us balanced. Here’s to the next 20, or maybe five years to come.

School holiday outings

School’s out and with it being winter a day or days spent by the swimming pool isn’t going to work, unless you are one of the privileged few who will be holidaying overseas.

If you are looking for cheaper options to keep your children amused here are a few ideas: A morning walk in the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. Totally free and perfect for ages four and up. Obviously the length of the walk will depend on you and your children but at the entrance (Entrance Precinct, Peggy Vera Road, just a bit up from the recreation centre entrance) you can see which walk to follow. Take along a small picnic, cool drinks etc, and off you go.

Rietvlei Zoo Farm: Another local place to visit and not too expensive. Lots to do and see for all ages. Take along blankets and a picnic and spend the day with nature.

The Glen Shopping Centre Nu Metro: Movies are always a hit but it can be pricey. If you are a Clicks Club Card holder you will get a discount. So take advantage of this.

Why don’t you get a few children together and enjoy an arts and crafts morning. Google ideas and whoever’s house you are having the morning at, supply cold drinks and chips or hot chocolate and biscuits.

A baking morning could also work, especially for ages five to 10. Keep it simple, cupcakes or biscuits, and either can be iced.

Good luck, I hope you survive.

That’s it for this week.

Oh, yes and you can always…shop till you drop!
