Thief has his day after failing to rob an elderly woman

The suspect snatched a 68-year-old woman's phone but was surprised when residents of The Hill chased after him.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – A would-be thief’s day was spoiled when he failed to successfully rob an elderly woman, Linda Gouveia, in The Hill on Tuesday morning, June 7.

The suspect snatched the 68-year-old woman’s phone but was surprised when residents of The Hill quickly chased after him. Once caught, the thief got a little taste of mob justice, before authorities were called.

Gouveia, who shared her experience with the COURIER, said she was grateful to the men from City Power who were quick to chase the thief as soon as she started screaming, although they were not the ones who beat the thief up.

Other elderly women, gathered around the thief, were impressed by what other young people did to protect an elderly woman. The women said people quickly came to help as the youngster was trying to run away.

The COURIER is awaiting comment and details about the arrest from SAPS.
