CWL holds fund-raiser

The Winter Fête, held every two years by the Johannesburg Diocesan Council of the Catholic Women’s League, will take place on June 5.

THE Winter Fête, held every two years by the Johannesburg Diocesan Council of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), will take place on June 5.

The fête will be held on the grounds of De La Salle Holy Cross College, at Road 3, Victory Park, from 09:00 until 16:00, as part of their fund-raising activities.

Visitors to the fête will find a variety of stalls and entertainment, including handiwork, toys, books, bottles, nearly new, white elephant, a variety of food stalls, a tea garden and soft drinks.

“We hope to entertain a large number of people throughout the day and all monies raised will go towards our CWL projects,” says Ann Scott, co-convener of the fête.

Over the 80 years of its existence in the Johannesburg diocese, the CWL has established a number of charitable projects.

These include the Adoption Society, which deals with foster care and placing of babies for adoption locally and overseas; the Mary Immaculate Queen Pre-School in Eldorado Park, which serves the surrounding areas and provides an affordable and thorough pre-school education to the children of many disadvantaged families and St Anne’s Home, which is “home” to 38 elderly women, 20 of whom are in the frail care section. Many of these residents are on limited pensions and the CWL provides funds to supplement the home’s income.

On each monthly pension payout day, the CWL Kopanong Soup Kitchen provides soup for more than 300 people queuing for their pensions, and support is also given to Mmamohau Motshehetsi Community Care and Support, which cares for orphans, vulnerable children and senior citizens, and the Wonke Wonke Day Care Centre, in Soweto.

Support is given to the Barcelona Squatter Camp in Daveyton, by providing social workers, before and after school care and meals.

“Over 60 branches are supporting this fête by hosting a stall,” added Scott.

“We need and look forward to your support at our fête – there will be a R5 entrance fee to the De La Salle Holy Cross College grounds and lucky ticket holders will win one of four hampers, which will be drawn throughout the day. Admittance for scholars is free.”
