US, SA foster trade and investment relationship

Gauteng Premier David Makhura welcomed Mr Young in the City of Gold.

AFTER almost 40 years since United States ambassador Andrew Young visited South Africa, he was hosted by the Joburg executive mayor, Clr Parks Tau and MMCs at the Apartheid Museum, Gold Reef City on Tuesday, March 29.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura welcomed Young in the City of Gold.

Young (84), a veteran diplomat and former mayor of Atlanta, and his delegation are on an excursion to foster trade and investment ties between the US and South Africa.

He was accompanied by his wife, Carolyn, and a delegation of American businessmen. Among other dignitaries, Young’s 30-strong entourage includes Kasim Reed, mayor of Atlanta, Georgia.

The City of Johannesburg’s executive director of economic development, Ravi Naidoo, made a presentation on business opportunities in Joburg.

This is the third leg of Young’s tour of South Africa. He has already been to Cape Town and eThekwini.

When Young first came to SA as an activist, church minister, educationist and diplomat, he met Soweto student leaders, newspapers editors and businessmen. At the time Young was campaigning rigorously for political change in the former apartheid South Africa.
