Easter accident stats to be announced by minister of transport

The number of deaths on the road is still concerning during the Easter holidays as thousands travel across the country and back.

THE Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, will release the Easter accidents stats tonight as traffic congestion has halted on the countries’s national roads as motorists have returned to their locations.

JMPD chief superintendent, Wayne Minnaar, and EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, told the COURIER that they will inform the community on their take and feelings on the behaviour of motorists this Easter once the minister of transport has released the stats.

These stats are eagerly awaited by many concerned motorists, residents and media houses following a number of arrests over the Easter weekend and also the impounding of many vehicles and buses.

Eight people were burnt beyond recognition and eight others injured in one of the most talked-about accidents that occurred in Limpopo this Easter.

The figures released by the minister for the period of Tuesday, December 1, 2015, to Monday, January 11, 2016, showed that 1 755 people died on the country’s roads during that period, which was a 14 per cent increase on the previous year’s figures.

There are a number of issues that arise from these figures.

In January 2015 similar road death statistics were issued by the Department of Transport (DoT). At the time, the DoT recorded that 1 368 people died during the festive season. Worryingly, 16.2 per cent of fatalities were children under the age of 14, while almost 22 per cent of all pedestrians killed were 14 years old or younger.

Stay connected with the Southern COURIER for an update after the eagerly awaited stats are released.
