Fleeing suspect dies after accident

Theunis Kotze, general manager ADT inland region said, “He was approached by five armed suspects who ordered him out of his vehicle.

A SUSPECT died after he crashed the ADT vehicle he had reportedly hijacked into a barrier in La Rochelle Road.

An ADT reaction officer had completed a response to a property in Side Road, Turffontein, and was patrolling in the area. He then entered the parking lot at the Turffontein Racecourse where he parked his vehicle and was standing off as per standard operating procedures.

Theunis Kotze, general manager ADT inland region said, “He was approached by five armed suspects who ordered him out of his vehicle. The suspects restrained the officer and disarmed him. They then stole several items. While the suspects were robbing him the guarding supervisor from the onsite guarding company (not ADT) arrived at the scene and the suspects fled in various directions.

“One of the suspects fled in the ADT vehicle, lost control of the vehicle and collided with the barrier on the corner of La Rochelle and Glenavon roads in Turffontein. He died on the scene and was cut out of the vehicle by the emergency services. The officer was found unharmed and the Johannesburg Metro Police attended the scene.

“On further investigation it appears that the suspects had entered the property with the intent to break into the premises. They had already held up the guards on duty at the time before they approached ADT’s reaction officer.”
