Youngsters raise money for animals
Debonairs in Oakdene put a cherry on top when they surprised the learners with pizzas.
JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) is R25 000 stronger thanks to the grade four learners of Trinityhouse Preparatory School in Randpark Ridge.
The learners and their teachers visited the AACL on Tuesday, October 6, to handover the funds they had raised.
The grade fours have been hosting an annual fundraiser for the past 12 years, raising funds for several charity organisations. “During the fundraising events at school, we teach the grade fours entrepreneurship skills. We held a Candy and Cake Day where they sold cupcakes and sweets to other learners,” explained a teacher, Shani Winter.
Since 2004 the school has donated R163 064 to AACL. Cindy Price, general manager at AACL, said they are putting the money to good use. “We have a Freedom Village for cats one to seven years old. Here people can interact with the cats as they are not in cages and roam around. These learners had the opportunity to mingle with them. Some of the learners do not have cats at their homes and this was a perfect opportunity for them to meet our ‘residents’,” she said.
Mark Groenewald, a learner, said he was happy to visit AACL and meet the animals. “I am glad to see that the animals live in this habitable environment. I really want to adopt a cat, however, not now. Happy dogs are a marvel to watch,” he said.
