Many youngsters play in their first tennis tournament

Nell Academy and the Ekurhuleni Tennis Academy for Excellence held a successful development tournament at the Germiston Tennis Club.

ACE Tennis Academy in association with Nell Academy and the Ekurhuleni Tennis Academy for Excellence held a successful development tournament at the Germiston Tennis Club on Sunday, August 30.

More than 50 enthusiastic children from Brakpan, Boksburg, Germiston, Alberton and Lenasia played in, what was for many their first tennis tournament. This development tournament, to be held on a monthly basis, is open to all juniors irrespective of their playing ability.

The development tournament is run on the play and stay principle developed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and embraced by Tennis South Africa (TSA).

Category winners:

Sportsman of the tournament:

– Experienced player: Leon Breedt from Hoërskool Die Anker in Brakpan.

– Beginner to intermediate player: TK Kgetsie from Dinwiddie Primary School in Germiston.

Most improved player: Elethu Tshona from Dinwiddie Primary School in Germiston.

Players of the tournament: Chenelle Nombelis and Jordan Morais from Laerskool Randhart in Alberton.

Division winners:

Experienced players girls: Michelle de Wet (Hoërskool Die Anker), Chenelle Nombelis (Laerskool Randhart) and Dimpho Kgetsi (Germiston High School).

Experienced players boys: Eugene de Wet (Hoërskool Die Anker), Pierre Francois Groenewald and Leon Breedt (Hoërskool Die Anker).

Green ball girls: Joint first Damaris Mugumbate and Tamzin Jansen and third Lesede Mabale (all Dinwiddie Primary School). Green ball boys: Jaden Rooskrantz (Colin Mann Primary School) and joint second Broderick Naidoo and TK Kgetsi (both Dinwiddie Primary School).

Orange ball group girls: Jody-Lee Popp (Mulbarton Primary School), Christine Kühn (Hoërskool Marais Viljoen) and Razeena Surtee (Mulbarton Primary School).

Orange ball group boys: Byron Bothma (Laerskool Randhart), Jesse Popp (Mulbarton Primary School) and joint third, Keaton Naidoo, Elethu Thsona and Vincent Feistell (all from Dinwiddie Primary School).

The next tournament is scheduled for September 28.
