Youth League show colours at Recreation Centre

Residents are highly distressed by the manner in which the youth league members conducted themselves.

THE concentrated presence of ANC Youth League (Gauteng) members, running amok and blocking the road in Kibler Park, on September 2, was not acceptable to the residents.

On two occasions the Youth League (Gauteng) requested permission to hold meetings in the Klipriversberg Recreation Centre, in Kibler Park.

The first application was made on Friday, August 28, and approved by the MMC for Community Development and Environment, Clr Chris Vondo, for the meeting on Sunday, August 30, and was paid for accordingly.

The second application was made on Monday, August 31, but was not granted, according to a member of the Johannesburg Department of Parks and Recreation, who does not want to be named.

The reason given was that there are certain programmes running during the week, which are accounted for and paid for by the organisation using the facility.

Apparently a booking by the ANC Youth League (Gauteng) was refused by Joburg Parks and Recreation for Wednesday, neither was it paid for. Members of the league, however, started arriving from 17:00 onwards.

The meeting on Sunday caused distress to the residents of Peggy Vera Road, in Kibler Park, where the recreation centre is situated, as the members did not abide by the bylaws of the city council.

Residents said the noise level was unbearable and that members of the league got out of hand, drinking liquor inside and outside the facility and blocking the road with vehicles.

On Monday morning the road was filled with rubbish, which was left behind by them.

On Wednesday, at 17:00, the ANC Youth League members arrived at the same venue, causing the same problems for residents in Kibler Park, as they again blocked the normal flow of traffic in the road and alcohol abuse was at the order of the day.

Residents are highly distressed by the manner in which the youth league members conducted themselves. Members of SAPS, CPF and Johannesburg Council observed the situation on Sunday and Wednesday.

The COURIER tried in vain to obtain comment from the councillor for Ward 125, the ANC’s Clr Solly Mokgase.

Karen du Plessis, Johannesburg’s deputy director of recreation had also not responded at the time going to press.
