Heist gone wrong: Four dead during The Hill shootout

Residents of the South gathered at the crime scene after hearing multiple gun shots.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – A cash in transit heist that started in the Johannesburg CBD, on July 23, when a truck carrying cargo was hijacked, progressed to Kibler Park, where goods were offloaded, and ended in The Hill.

An unconfirmed number of suspects hijacked a courier truck and a white VW Polo near Selby and drove straight to Kibler Park, where they offloaded the cargo into a getaway vehicle, a black Nissan Navara.

National SAPS spokesperson Lieut Col Katlego Mogale said: “Two suspects were fatally shot, three suspects were arrested, two security guards were killed and firearms were recovered at a robbery in Rosettenville.

”It is alleged that a courier truck was hijacked near Selby and taken, together with its escort vehicle, to Kibler Park, where the suspects exchanged vehicles.

”They took the shipment of cellphones into a white BMW and a black Nissan Navara.

”The suspects were picked up in Rosettenville, where they were confronted by security guard and a shootout ensued.

”Johannesburg Flying Squad members, who were on patrol, heard the shots and responded.

”A heavy exchange of fire took place, in which two suspects and two security guards were fatally wounded. Police arrested three suspects and recovered five unlicensed firearms and the two vehicles that the suspects were using.

“Further investigation revealed that the white BMW was reported hijacked in Hammanskraal and the Nissan Navara was hijacked in Florida.

”The arrested suspects will appear on charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of suspected hijacked motor vehicles, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.”

The cash in transit vehicle was found by the Mondeor SAPS on July 23, abandoned on the corner of Swartkoppies Road and Main Service Road, in Kibler Park.

Two suspects, who were allegedly hiding in the vicinity of the Kibler Recreation Centre, were apprehended and taken to the Mondeor Police Station. Both suspects were found inside the hijacked escort vehicle, the white VW Polo.
