Temporary replacement for damaged drain covers

Damaging of storm water slabs is happening throughout the city and many slabs have been temporarily replaced.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has found a new use for yellow cone barriers – temporary storm water drain covers.

Concrete slabs covering storm water drains are damaged in most parts of the South, including Linmeyer, Ormonde, Rosettenville and Winchester Hills. Some of the damage can be attributed to severe flooding. Other damages are a result of thieves who break the slabs in order to remove the steel.

Ward 56 Clr Dennis Jane explained the usage of yellow cones to cover damaged drains. “The city is dealing with various aspects of storm water drains. The city hasn’t been able to find something that can easily be replaced so JRA has put yellow cones as a temporary measure. There’s no budget to replace every curb inlet slab every time it gets damaged.”

Jane also confirmed that the damaging of storm water slabs is happening throughout the city and many slabs have been temporarily replaced with yellow cones.

In November, JRA initiated an action plan to deal with summer floods which usually affect mobility within the city. JRA’s Flood Management and Storm Water Plan revealed that severe flooding required R60 million to repair the city’s damaged road infrastructure network, including potholes and storm water drains, and repairs and rehabilitation of nine bridges and culverts.
