Airport robbers arrested in Oakdene

Alleged airport robbery Kingpin apprehended in the South.

OAKDENE – Two men, suspected to be linked to other airport robberies, were arrested in Oakdene on January 12.

The men had been pursued by SAPS for a robbery that occurred in July 2014, when Pakistani nationals were robbed of an undisclosed amount of money.

The National Spokesperson for SAPS Solomon Makgale reported that the Pakistani nationals have been some of the many victims followed from Gauteng airports and subsequently robbed.

“The suspects, while posing as police officers, allegedly followed the victims from the airport before they robbed them, by first flashing what looked like police appointment cards at the victims before relieving them of their belongings,” he said.

News24 reported that Makgale revealed investigations were under way into other crimes the men may be linked to, and the police believes one of the men was the “Kingpin” of the airport robbery set-up and that the alleged Kingpin was possibly linked to several cases of people followed from the airport and subsequently being robbed of their valuables.

“In nearly all of the cases the suspects have been impersonating the police, including flashing police paraphernalia at their unsuspecting victims.”

Two vehicles were allegedly confiscated during the arrests on Monday morning.
