Leaking gas fumes a headache for locals

The leaking gas in Regents Park Estate is being attended to.

Regents Park Estate community, especially on Rosetta Street, have been battling leaking gas fumes since March 17.

According to one of the residents, Patricia O’Neil, people from Initec Civils came to dig with the purpose to install fibre. However, while digging they might have hit one of the gas pipes.

“We have been suffering from blurry vision, stomach cramps, headaches and other health problems from the gas leak. We have already attempted to get the environmental health inspector out here and the Egoli Gas people. Also, Initec Civils promised to come out but no one has been here yet.

“I am so worried about my neighbourhood. There are also some cables exposed and I’m worried about people stealing it.

The pipe Initec Civils mistakenly hit while digging.

“The hazardous trenches left there pose a danger to the community as already two people have fallen into them,” she said.

The COURIER contacted David Radebe from Initec Civils on May 13. He said he is aware of the situation, however, they contacted Egoli Gas.

“They came to see the problem and promised to come back, but they haven’t. Our team dug further to expose the pipe so that they can easily work on it. I’ve contacted their director who promised to send a team. We apologise to the community yet we are dealing with it,” he said.

UPDATE:

David Radebe said the Egoli gas is on-site to check the leak.

“It is not leaking where we laid our fibre duct. They are busy detecting the leak. It leaks because it’s an old pipe.

“It is not leaking from the exposed part it is leaking under the tar. They are going to cut it and block it. They did detect and they found the leak. And that gas pipe is no longer used. They are now going to discontinue the pipe,” he said.
