JSPCA bemoans a rise in animal abandonment during the festive season

The JSPCA are asked members of the public to donate food at their local JSPCA kennel to help feed the animals.

With the festive season drawing to an end the JSPCA was one company that kept on working during the period and they saw a spike in people surrendering their pets during Christmas Eve.

Liana Marx, public relations for JSPCA, told the CHRONICLE that December 24 was one of the worst days she has seen at JSPCA.

Marx said, “The morning of Christmas Eve we had people surrendering 20 furry friends between 08:00 and 11:00. In total, on that day alone, we had 40 animals being surrendered for various reasons ranging from not wanting the animal anymore to people moving.”

Marx further said, “So far we have received no animals that were given to people as Christmas presents but, unfortunately, those animals are sent to us only later in the year when the puppies start to grow up. It is sad when the children are tired of the ‘new plaything’ or when the animals start costing the owners more than they have budgeted.”

Marx said that animals are a long-term commitment and having a dog just for the sake of security is also not a good reason to get one as it will cost you less to get an alarm system installed.

Marx also said that JSPCA has cages full of animals looking for new homes, and yet, sometimes it’s better for an animal to end up at the JSPCA as they get food to eat and a warm bed to sleep in.

“We have volunteers coming in to help with the animals. The volunteers take the animals for walks and play with them to ensure they receive the love they need. If you want to volunteer at JSPCA, feel free to visit us. Who knows, you might meet your best friend there.”
