WATCH: Joburg South residents to spend another night without power

Several suburbs south of Johannesburg will remain off until repairs and replacement work is complete.

With thousands of residents still without power across the South, the City Power says possible restoration time is early tomorrow morning, October 20.

The outage occurred around 20h30 after Robertsham substation caught fire plunging the area into darkness.

According to the City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, they are going to assess the extent of the damage caused by the fire at Robertsham substation that plunged most of the southern suburbs into darkness.

“Two main transformers have been razed to the ground,” he said.

Mangena advised the residents on the estimated restoration time.

“We do not promise that the power will be restored today. we are going to assess how long it will take to return the power but definitely not today,” said Mangena.

Mop-up operations are underway as teams assess the damage caused by the fire.

Engineering Operations Isaac Rampedi briefed the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Cllr Mpho Moerane as he arrives at the Robertsham substation to oversee mop-up operations and City Power’s recovery plans currently underway.
