WATCH: Joburg South residents without power after Robertsham substation fire

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage.

Most parts in the South were left without power this Tuesday morning after the Robertsham substation caught fire on Monday evening, October 18.

The outage occurred around 20:30 plunging the area into darkness.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the cause of the fire is currently not known.

“The fire has been extinguished. The substation needs to be dry ice cleaned, damages can be assessed in the morning.”

“After the cleaning, we will assess the ability to restore supply. No estimated restoration time is given at this stage we’ll update affected customers throughout,” said Mangena.

The following areas are affected:

Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Cllr Mpho Moerane will today, October 19 visit Robertsham substation following the incident.

The Mayor will assess the damage caused by the fire, and oversee City Power’s recovery plans to ensure electricity is restored to most of the residents in the South as quickly as possible.

Power Outage Tips:

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.
  • Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors and away from windows.
  • Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.
  • Check with local officials about heating and cooling locations open near you.
