Open space in Xavier Reef Estate a problem

Ward 54 Clr Sergio Dos Santos urged the community to take responsibilty for their surroundings.

XAVIER REEF ESTATE – Residents in Xavier Reef Estate are worried about the open space between Akker Avenue and Kersieboom Street, and littering, rodents and safety are some of the worrying factors for the community.

Ward 54 Clr Sergio dos Santos is aware of this problem. He said the open space, which runs parallel along Akker Street, commences from Central Street and runs south towards Saffron Road. The whole open space belongs to the City of Johannesburg and it is not adequaetely maintained by City Parks. There are issues such as vagrants, criminal activity and illegal dumping.

“I have requested City Parks on several occasions to maintain the open property but to no avail. In August 2012 and August 2013 there was a Ward Tour with MMC Greef as well as the Previous Regional Director and other officials representing the various Member of Executives. I took the delegation to this open property and pleaded that something be done about this problematic open property. To date, unfortunately nothing has been done,” explained Clr Dos Santos.

He also said he has been assisting Gold Reef Private School in their application to lease or purchase a portion of the land, which will curb a part of the problematic area and assist the surrounding areas with the high demand for quality schooling.

He has also requested through the Integrated Developed Plan (IDP) annual review process for Beautification Entrance to Xavier Reef Estates, New Developed or Recreational Park along that open property, cleaning of the open property and stream, which will include the removal or pruning of overgrown vegetation and removal of alien vegetation.

“I will continue to fight for all my residents and have these types of issues resolved. All I ask is for the political will and the various departments to come on board to assist the residents. I also request that any residents living in the area that is responsible for the constant illegal dumping to please stop and make use of the various dumping sites such as Robinson Landfill in Stafford,” concluded Clr Sergio dos Santos.
