Ward 57 to benefit from Rand Water’s project

Ntombi Xulu is the community liaison officer (CLO) for the project.

Rand Water representatives recently held a meeting with the residents of Ward 57 at South Hills Recreation Centre about the G18 project.

Justice Mohale, media relations manager from Rand Water, said the G18 steel pipeline is an emergency priority project. It involves the replacement of a 1.5km pipeline that runs through South Hills to Wychwood in Germiston.

It was discovered that a portion of the existing pipeline has structural defects requiring it to be replaced. The size of the pipeline is 1 120mm in diameter.

The entire project will run for 12 months. The first six months has been set aside for the designing of the affected section of the pipeline. The remaining six months will be used for the laying of it. The designing of the affected section has already been completed.

The contractor of the project is Amapipe Consortium, led by Blessing Maumela.

“During this period, 31 people will be employed on this project. This is one of Rand Water’s Socio-Economic Projects that will empower local communities and organisations (NPOs and NGOs) with skills development and jobs opportunities.

“There will be economic stimulation in Ward 57 through employment of skilled and unskilled labour. There will also be subcontracting opportunities available for local small, micro, medium enterprises (SMMEs),” explained Mohale.
