GALLERY: Herman Mashaba hands out title deeds in South Hills

The executive mayor, Herman Mashaba, and housing MMC Meshack van Wyk handed over 38 title deeds to beneficiaries who applied for housing back in 1996.

EXCITEMENT and relief was the order of the day when title deeds to the newly built government housing units in South Hills were handed over to residents on August 15.

The executive mayor, Herman Mashaba, and housing MMC Meshack van Wyk handed over 38 title deeds to beneficiaries who applied for housing back in 1996.

Mashaba said the handover was part of restoring communities’ dignity.

“This handover of title deeds is a success because of the multicultural government that I have been working with. In Johannesburg this multicultural government, within three year,s handed over 6 600 title deeds. These title deeds allow beneficiaries to take full ownership of the units,” said Mashaba.

People from various wards attended the ceremony to congratulate the beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries were all smiles and sat in an orderly fashion as they waited for their title deeds.

According to Mashaba, 408 of 6 204 units planned for South Hills are complete.

“It is comprised of RDP units, bonded rental units, community residential units and affordable social housing units,” said Mashaba.

The mayor urged the beneficiaries not to allow taverns, drug lords and foreigners to occupy their units.

In response, the crowd called out, “Thank you, mayor.”

Councillor van Wyk addressed the beneficiaries, saying he doesn’t want them to sell their units and go back to living in a shack.

“Gogos, please lock your title deeds in a safe place where no one can find them. I want you to be happy and enjoy your stay in your new homes,” said van Wyk.

Fikile Nene, one of the beneficiaries, said she was happy to finally get the home she had been waiting for since 1996.

“I was living in Troyeville for many years. To finally get a place of my own is amazing and I hope what was done for me can be done for others as well,” said Nene.
