WATCH: Rosettenville residents unhappy about claimed unfair dismissal

Residents took their concerns to the filling station.

ROSETTENVILLE residents took their frustrations to the local petrol station on March 30, following an employee and employer dispute.

According to residents, reasons for them to protest are the number of foreign nationals that have been employed by the petrol station. Residents were irate about the dismissal of the employee, claiming it’s unfair. They demanded proof that the employee was guilty of misconduct in the workplace because they fail to understand how he can misbehave when he depends on this job to make ends meet.

Therefore, residents opted to shut down the station and motorists were unable to fill their vehicle’s tanks.

Residents demanded the employee be reinstated as they claimed he was dismissed for no reason.

They further wanted to know why a local person was treated badly while foreign nationals at the station are treated with care.

Topping their demands was for the station to provide valid documents of the foreign nationals employed at the station.

Moffatview SAPS quickly attended to the scene and dispersed residents. Ward 56 South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) members and the station’s management agreed to meet on April 2 to resolve the matter.

Meeting

Sanco’s regional spokesperson Simphiwe Hlafa said along with the management of the station they were able to resolve all issues and are pleased with how the proceedings unfolded.

Sanco stated they are happy that the station supports SMMEs and treatment of local personnel.

“The reasons for the employee’s dismissal was that he was sleeping on duty, fighting with customers and other issues. So, we pleaded with management to reinstate him and we will monitor him.

“The station agreed to provide us with valid documents of the foreign nationals which states they aren’t here illegally,” said Hlafa.

The management

There was not much comment from the management. They told COURIER everything will be ironed out during the second meeting, which will be on April 19. The employee will remain at home until the second meeting is over.
