Woman burns with boiling hot water at South Rand Hospital

Sarah Yika (30) was admitted at South Rand Hospital after suffering a stroke and she has no feeling in her lower body.

A NURSE from South Rand Hospital in The Hill could find herself in trouble after allegedly burning a patient with very hot water on October 15.

Sarah Yika (30) was admitted at South Rand Hospital after suffering a stroke and she has no feeling in her lower body. She couldn’t even stretch her legs as she required assistance in moving around.

The nurse allegedly ordered her to move from her bed in order to help her bath. She then helped Sarah to move from her bed to the bathroom. Here it is claimed the nurse turned the hot water tap on to run. But the nurse had other commitments to attend to and left Sarah alone. A few minutes later Sarah saw her thigh turning darker. To her surprise she was burning but unfortunately she couldn’t feel anything. That’s when she screamed for help.

She claimed the nurses shifted the blame and pinned it on her saying she burnt herself. Sarah’s brother Thoma Yika has been in a dispute with the hospital regarding the matter.

“Someone must be held accountable for letting my sister sustain such injuries. Even the management was rude to me when I approached them at first about this. What irks me is that my sister was blamed after the nurse couldn’t do her job,” said Thoma.

South Rand Hospital spokesperson Phafudi Molapo said they have received the complaint and they are investigating the matter.

Sarah is currently under supervision of the nurses at the hospital.
