Abundance of condoms in compound causes fury

Fatima Jeque of Rosettenville blames patients of the South African National Central-Rand Alcoholic and Drug Centre (SANCA) for throwing condoms in her compound.

FATIMA Jeque of Rosettenville blames patients of the South African National Central-Rand Alcoholic and Drug Centre (SANCA) for throwing condoms in her compound.

“The situation is getting worse day by day and these condoms are thrown with urine inside them. I have little children and every time they return from school they play around the yard. It is terrifying because one day they might drink the urine,” said Fatima.

Fatima claims that the problem started last year. At first she thought it could have been the wind that was blowing the condoms to her compound. But as time went by, used condoms were constantly on her compound. She tried to caution SANCA about the situation, but nothing changed.

“Not so long ago I personally approached them, and asked them to please throw their condoms in the bin after using them. The next day the condoms were already thrown again in my compound. I can’t keep on cleaning after condoms that are not mine,” she added.

Fatima wants SANCA to enforce tight security so that patients can stop throwing condoms. The COURIER visited SANCA, and one of the workers, Lungile Sibisi, a social worker, said:“We are aware of the allegations that are posed at us. We did go to Fatima to apologise and told her that we will try to defuse the situation. But because our patients are mostly school learners, when it is a screening day they use their friends’ urine from school in order to test negative for drug substance. After that they throw these condoms next door without us seeing them. But we will try now to do our screenings inside the house.”
