Drug addicts living in abandoned house causes concern to Turffontein residents

TURFFONTEIN residents are furious with the unknown owner of the abandoned house at the corner of de Villiers and Alexander streets which, according to them, has been occupied by drug addicts.

The previous owners moved out when the house burnt down and the house has been abandoned for months now, residents claim.

“Drug addicts smoke their drugs at the abandoned house putting residents’ lives at risk. Residents’ belongings get stolen now and again since the addicts have occupied the abandoned house. Residents have confronted the addicts several times but with no luck,” one neighbour told the COURIER.

Another neighbour said their children can’t even play outside the yard because they are scared they might get hurt.

“I personally want the owners or someone to deal with this because we are not safe, I can’t even put my clothes on my washing line because my clothes might get stolen.

“We don’t know who to contact regarding the abandoned house, even previous owners vanished leaving no trace behind. We as residents are fed up.

“The house is definitely causing an unstable environment for residents, ” said the neighbour.

The COURIER could not trace any cases opened or incidents reported to SAPS as yet.

The city’s response on the matter: “The property is zoned residential four in terms of the Johannesburg Town Planning Scheme 1979 and permitted to be used as a residential building. A site development plan has been submitted and approved by the local authority with the application on July 6, 2017.

“No building plans or occupancy certificate has been granted. Building development management will investigate these and provide feedback once they have completed their investigation.”
