Alberton Dam hosts Athletics’ Cross Country League

It was a sunny day at our local dam with lots of athletes and spectators.

THE Central Gauteng Athletics’ Cross Country League 2018 (eighth league) event was hosted by the Alberton Athletics Club at the Alberton Dam on July 28.

It was a sunny day at our local dam with a number of athletes and spectators. The day’s action started at 11.20am and ended later in the afternoon.

AND THEY’RE OFF: Like bolts of lightning, the athletes launch themselves to get ahead in the race. Look at them go!

There were people everywhere. Some were warming up before they had to compete, while others enjoyed a cool drink or popsicle in the shade while spectating. Upbeat music was playing, making for a jovial Saturday atmosphere.

Cross country athletes from all over central Gauteng were there to compete for their place at the Central Gauteng Athletics Championships that will be taking place on August 18 at the Kagiso Sports Complex in Krugersdorp.

QUEUING UP: A lot of the younger athletes gathered at the starting point, shortly before taking off.

Athletes varied widely in age. The youngest competed early in the event, while the older and veteran athletes competed later. Boys and girls from under eight years up to men and women older than 60 all had a great time participating in the day’s sports.

GETTING READY: A big group of athletes anxiously anticipate the start of their race.

Mandla Radebe of Central Gauteng Athletics said: “It’s an exciting day in Alberton. We look forward to see which outstanding athletes will be at the championship event next month.”

WHO WILL WIN?: These two young ladies competed towards the finish line.

• Final results to be published as soon as they are available.
